Review: 10361 Holiday Express Train | Winter Village Magic on Historic Rails
A charming Winter Village locomotive with animated carriages, festive tracks, and LEGO's first historic 3D-printed element
Unboxing & First Impressions
Lifting the lid reveals six numbered paper bags and sixteen curved rail sections. Together, the rails form a full circular track. Four separate instruction books sit inside the box. Family members can each build a different carriage at the same time on Christmas Eve. You also discover a tiny special package containing something special. Inside sits a micro-scale toy train made using 3D printing. Measuring only a few studs long, its tiny wheels spin and its chimney slides up and down.
Fill up your mug with hot cocoa and lay out the tracks around the tree. The LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train (10361) pairs classic holiday cheer with clever working gears across 956 pieces.
Specifications & Quick Facts
The Build Experience & Engineering
Construction begins with the small passenger platform. This cheerful side build includes a vintage lamppost, a wooden bench, a station clock, and festive wreaths. It sets a warm mood right away. Next, you build the star of the show: the steam engine. The boiler uses curved blue elements accented with gold trim. Under the boiler sits a clever mechanical link. As the large drive wheels roll forward, a hidden cam pushes the smokestack up and down in a steady puffing rhythm.
Behind the engine sits the coal tender. Builders will appreciate how practical this wagon is. The tender roof lifts off easily, leaving a hollow bay sized for a Powered Up motor and battery hub. After the coal car, you build the animated flatcar. An internal gear connects the wheel axle to a turntable. As the train rolls, a cute brick-built polar bear spins around while ringing a brass bell. Finally, you assemble the passenger coach with cosy bench seats, a lantern, and a lift-off roof.
Design, Proportions & Aesthetics
Swapping bright red for royal blue gives this train a stately presence. In fact, if you remove the holiday wreaths, the locomotive looks like a vintage European express train from the 1920s. Gold boiler bands and printed round gauges add classic charm without feeling cluttered.
Furthermore, the proportions look great on the rails. Each carriage measures six studs wide. This matches previous Winter Village sets like Holiday Main Street (10308). The rounded coach windows evoke the romance of classic rail travel. Our only small design critique is the open cab on the locomotive. While an open back makes it easy to place the driver, a full rear wall would look a little more solid.
Minifigures, Prints & Details
Four exclusive minifigures bring the train to life. The conductor looks sharp in a navy uniform jacket with printed gold watch chains. Alongside him, the train driver wears denim overalls and an engineer cap, holding an oil can and a wrench.
Two passengers round out the cast with warm holiday cheer. A young woman wears a green winter jumper and holds a travel mug. Beside her, a young boy wears red earmuffs and holds a golden train ticket. The tiny 3D-printed toy train steals the spotlight as the ultimate easter egg. Packed inside a gift box on the flatcar, this thumbnail-sized locomotive marks a historic first for retail LEGO sets.
Display Presence & Playability
Because the set includes sixteen curved tracks, you can set up a full seventy-centimetre loop right away. Pushing the train along the rails activates both the moving smokestack and the bell-ringing polar bear together. The mechanical motion brings pure joy to children and guests around the tree.
Additionally, the train fits right into Winter Village layouts alongside Alpine Lodge (10325) or Santa's Post Office (10339). For builders who like automation, clear motor steps in the manual make adding remote control parts easy. It is a solid festive set that looks great rolling around a tree skirt or parked at a holiday station.
Brick Trivia & Designer Secrets
- The micro toy train in the gift box is the first functional 3D-printed element ever included in a mass-retail LEGO box set.
- The dark-blue and light-blue colour palette was chosen so railway collectors could easily repurpose the engine for non-holiday layouts.
- The coal tender features built-in wire routing channels specifically designed to hold official Powered Up battery cables cleanly.
Master Builder Field Notes
- Test the vertical smokestack lift arm by rolling the drive wheels manually before pressing the boiler shell into place.
- Ensure the gear mesh on the polar bear flatcar is clean and free of dust so the turntable spins smoothly without friction.
- Assemble the circular track on a firm wooden board or carpet runner so the joins stay flat under the weight of the train.
Display Ideas & Custom Modifications
- Add a standard Powered Up train motor and hub inside the tender to let the train circle your Christmas tree autonomously.
- Thread warm-white micro LED wire through the passenger carriage roof to illuminate the interior during cosy winter evenings.
